Click to enlarge News of the Day – November 15 2004 ‘To get somebody of Omar’s caliber is certainly a godsend,’ San Francisco GM Brian Sabean said after signing the 37 year old free agent Omar Vizquel to a 3-year $12.25 million pact. Sabean went on to declare, ‘I think if you watch him play, he has a passion for the game and is in great shape.’ The switch hitting, Venezuelan born Omar Vizquel was the Mariners starting shortstop on Opening Day 1989 as a 22 year old rookie. After being traded to Cleveland in the mid-‘90s and helping the Indians win division titles during the late 1990s, Vizquel began to receive recognition as one of the best fielding shortstops in baseball history. |
