The eighth pick in the June 1991 draft by the Atlanta Braves, Jason Schmidt has had a solid career with the Braves, Pirates, Giants, and Dodgers. Schmidt throws a moving, mid-90s fastball and a 82-84 mph change up. He posted three consecutive years of over 195 strikeouts – 196 Ks in 2002… 208 in 2003… and a career-high 251 in 2004. Schmidt was a NL all-star in 2003, 2004, and 2006. On June 6, 2005, he tied the Giants franchise record for strikeouts in a game with 16 in a 2-1 victory over the Marlins, striking out the final three batters after a wild pitch had put runners on second and third with no outs. In his 12th season, 2006, Jason Schmidt went 11-9 in 32 starts with 180 Ks in 213.1 innings. In the off-season, he signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Dodgers for three years and $47 million. |
