J. R. Richard possessed a blazing fastball and led the Houston Astros in their pennant battles during the 1970's. J. R. Richard averaged six strike-outs per game for ten years; the third highest in major league history. He limited opposing hitters to a .212 batting average; the third lowest in history. He was always among the league leaders in wins per/year. In July of 1980, J. R. Richard suffered a major stroke and was forced to retire from baseball at the age of 30. J. R.
