An aggressive, tireless worker, Bruce Hurst spent his first two major league seasons, 1980-81, bouncing back-and-forth with the Boston Red Sox and Pawtucket of Class-AAA. In 1982 and 1983 the 6-ft, 3-inch, 215 pound, left-hander went a combined 15-19 win/loss for the Red Sox. In 1984, the fastballer completed 9-of-33 starts, 218 innings and had a 12-12 record, with a solid 3.92 ERA for the Red Sox. In 1985 Hurst went 11-13, then 13-8 in ’86, and 15-13 in ’87. He recorded his 1000 strike out in 1988 and had a 18-6 record, 3.66 ERA which helped bring Boston win its 2nd AL Crown in three years – 1986 and 1988. He lost two decisions in the playoffs against Oakland despite striking out 12 in 13 innings of work. Bruce Hurst signed as a free agent with the San Diego Padres prior to the 1989 season and went 15-11 and posted a career-best 2.69 ERA while pitching in a bigger ballpark.
