Baseball Historian Biography

Gary Carter was the top catcher during the 1980's, he won three 'Gold Glove Awards' and holds the NL record for the most games caught (2,056). Carter hit 20 or more home runs in nine different years. In 1978, Carter set a major league record with just one passed ball in 157 games. He led the NL catchers in assists 4 times, in double plays 5 times, total chances 7 times and putouts 8 times. Gary Carter was voted the Rookie of the Year and made ten All-Star appearances. In 1980, he finished 2nd in the MVP voting . Carter is ranked by historians in the top ten for catchers in baseballs' history.
