1945 Chicago Cubs The compelling performances of the Chicago Cubs all season long captured the attention of the fans and media during the last months of World War II. The '45 Cubs had the highest team batting average, .277 in baseball and the lowest ERA in the NL - 2.98, and finished first in an eight team league with a 98-56 record. But, lost the World Series 4 Games to 3 to the Detroit Tigers.
