Headline News - Devil Rays Pound White Sox
April 5, 1998 Baseballhistorian.com - Newspaper Clipping - Knuckle-baller Dennis Springer kept the Chicago White Sox at bay and led the Tampa Bay Devil to a 8-2 victory. Springer pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowed only 6 hits and 2 runs in winning his first game of the young season. White Sox starter Scott Eyre couldn't survive the fifth inning after surrendering 4 runs on 9 hits and 4 walks.

Fred McGriff lined a home run in the 5th inning, his first of the year. McGriff has now hit a home run in 32 different major league parks. Devil Rays' catcher Mike DiFelice smashed White Sox reliever Carlos Castillo's first pitch for his fifth career home run, his first of this young season. The Devil Rays increased their season record to 3-2. Attendance at St. Petersburg 36,599.

 

Devil Rays Top Tigers 5-3, Canseco Hits 3-Run Homer

Jose Canseco powered a three run homer in his return from a 4-game hand injury absence to lead the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 5-3 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers. Winning pitcher Rolando Arrojo (5-10) allowed the Tigers 3 runs in 5 1/3 innings, long reliever Albie Lopez pitched the middle 2 2/3 innings, allowed only 2 hits, struck out 3, walked none and closer Roberto Hernandez shut down the Tigers in the 9th to collect his' 39th save of the year.

In the 5th inning, with the score tied 2-2, Canseco blasted his' 32nd home run of the year off starting pitcher C.J. Nitkowski -(2-5). Karim Garcia, the Tigers' right-fielder, doubled and hit his' 10th homer for the year in four at bats. Tampa Bay is now 62-78 and the Tigers, 57-82. Time of Game 2:45, Attendance 15,056.
