1993 San Diego Padres
Padres traded away stars in one of baseball's biggest fire sales ever!

The San Diego Padres started the 1993 season with a ball club that had 1992's batting leader and home run champion and ended the year with mostly rookies and unheard of minor league players.

In 1992 the Padres posted a 82-80 mark, third place in the National League West Division and ended with a lowly 61-101 record - dead last in the NL West.

During mid-1993, the team traded high salaried star sluggers, Fred McGriff and Gary Sheffield, and pitching mainstays Bruce Hurst, Greg Harris and veteran Roger Mason.

Sheffield led the league in 1992 with a .330 batting average and McGriff's 35 home runs were tops in the NL.

However, the Padres kept superstar Tony Gwynn, who collected his 11th consecutive .300 plus season in 1993, hit .358, second in the NL.

But, along came Rookie Phil Planter, who captured the attention of baseball fans in '93 by blasting 34 homers along with a even 100 RBIs and closer Gene Harris, who rang up 23 saves.

In 1993, the San Diego Padres roster included 46 different players - 23 batters and 23 pitchers.
