The Chicago White Sox were 24-40 on June 21, 1987 then rallied in the second half of the year, going 53-45 and finished only 8 games out of 1st place in the AL West with a 77-85 record. Ivan Calderon, Gary Redus and Daryl Boston were the team's starting outfielders. Harold Baines, nagged by knee injuries, was the DH. Greg Walker, the 1st baseman, Fred Manrigue 2B, Tim Hulett 3B and Ozzie Guillen, who led the AL in chances was their shortstop. Carlton Fisk was the starting catcher and rookie Ron Karkovice the backup. In the later part of June the club was hitting only .228 and the pitching staff's ERA was 4.51 and the team was mired in last place. Richard Dotson was 4-4, Jose DeLeon 4-6, Floyd Bannister 3-6 and Bill Long 3-3. Reliver Bobby Thigpen, 2-2, was shipped to the minors in early June. Knowing the ball club needed a yount movement, general manager Larry Himes, traded pitchers Dotson and Bannister. The Sox were confident that pitching newcomers Jack McDowell, Joel Davis and Melido Perez would all be big major league winners in the future. Jack McDowell who helped lead Stanford University to the NCAA championship, joined the White Sox in the final month of 1987. He was outstanding for the Sox and was 3-0, with a mere 1.93 ERA. Perez showed excellent control in the minors. He walked only 27 batters and fanned 177 in 198 minor league innings while going 12-8. baseballhistorian.com
