During the height of the Great Depression the Philadelphia Athletics traded three of the best players in baseball, pitchers Lefty Grove and Rube Walberg and second baseman Max 'Camera Eye' Bishop. In exchange the Red Sox traded pitcher Bob Kline and defensive ace shortstop Harold Rabbit Warstler plus an undisclosed amount of cash $$$. Upon Further Review: Connie Mack, the Athletics owner, clearly stated the key to the deal was the cash. The A's weren't drawing enought fans because of the Depression and with two teams in Philadelphia (Phillies), he had no choice but to trade the popular players. Lefty Grove had won over 20 games seven straight years, 1927 thru 1933, including 28 in 1930 and 31 in 1931 and along with Rube Walberg and Max Bishop plus others helped the Athletics win 3 straight AL pennants, 1929-31 and two back-to-back World Titles, 1929-30. Walberg posted a very solid 20-12 record in 1931.
