Maury Wills, the great Los Angeles Dodger shortstop, ushered in a new era by single-handedly making the stolen base a dominant offensive weapon during the 1960's. In 1960, Wills led the NL with 50 stolen bases- the highest total in the NL since Max Carey stole 51 in 1923. In 1962, Maury Wills set a major league record by stealing 104 bases in a single season, he also set the record by being caught stealing only 13 times. Wills scored 130 runs, batted .299 and edged out superstar Willie Mays by seven points to take the Most Valuable Player Award and he won his second 'Gold Glove'. Maury Wills led the NL in steals six straight years, (a record), and tied the record for most years leading in singles with four straight, 1963-67. Wills style of offensive- slapping at the ball, hit and run, steal bases led the Dodgers in their pennant drives thru the 1960's ( the Dodgers won four pennants ). In 1965, he stole 94 bases and helped the Dodgers win the pennant and World Series. In the World Series, he whacked two singles and two doubles in game five. Traded to the Pirates after 1966, Wills was moved to 3rd base and in 1968 he was drafted by the Montreal Expos, but by then his skills had diminished considerably. He was named the Seattle Mariners manager in 1980 but was fired in less than a year.
