A superstar defensive second baseman and one of the fastest base runners during 19th century baseball, Bid McPhee launched his professional baseball career at age 20 in 1880 with Akron, an independent traveling team. In 1882 McPhee joined the Cincinnati Reds of the newly formed American Association. And, although old records of this league are a little sketchy, this can safely be written - in 1882 John McPhee led the AA in fielding average… and in 1888, in a 134 games schedule, he batted .289 lined 20 doubles and led the league in triples with 19 as well as led the league with 95 stolen bases. When the Cincinnati Redlegs returned to the National League in 1890 Bid McPhee manned second base up-to and including 1899.
