Outfielder, Catcher, IF – Cleveland Forest Citys (NL) 1896-1899; Detroit Tigers (AL) 1901-02, 1903; Baltimore Orioles (AL) 1902 An all-around athlete, Lewis McAllister played seven seasons during the time major league baseball was organizing its resources at the turn of the century – 1896-1903. Born in Austin Mississippi on July 23 1874, Sport McAllister played eight games at age 22 with Cleveland then a National League team in 1896. Dead Ball Era Baseball History A solid defensive player with speed, records show he played six different positions, including pitcher, the next season – hitting .219 in 43 games. In 113 games in 1899, he hit .237, with six doubles, a career high 8 triples, hit one homer, scored 29 runs, with 21 RBIs. After a year off, Sport McAllister joined the Detroit Tigers in 1901 of the newly formed American League. In 80 games, he hit a career best .301, with 9 Ds, 4 Ts, 3 Hrs, scored 45 runs, 57 RBIs and stole a career high 17 bases. He signed in late-1902 with Baltimore, played just 3 games for them, before returning for his last MLB season with Detroit in 1903. |
