Dodger scouts signed Clem after watching him perform remarkable strikeout feats in high school. 1944 was his 1st year of organized baseball. After a 2 year stint as a Paratrooper during World War II, Clem Labine worked his way up to a trial with the Dodgers in 1950. He was sent down to St. Paul but came back to the Dodgers during the tight '51 stretch drive to win 4 out of 5 games including a shutout against the New York Giants in a crucial playoff game.
