Baseball Historian Biography

Al Evans, Bats RH, Washington Senators, 5'11", 190 lbs.

A willing-worker Al Evans played in the majors for 12 seasons. He was the leading defensive catcher in the AL in 1949 with a .992 fielding pct. Evans took part in 372 chances and made only 3 errors. A well-known backstop during this era he caught for Washington while some of the top players of  the American League batted, including Hall of Fame members Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, and Larry Doby .

Al Evans was also one of the leading hitters on the Senators - and got first call over the other backstops... In 1949, Al Evans hit .271.
