Nicknamed the "Shooter" an everyday man's type of player, Beck was a generous fella who would belly up with fans and graciously sign autographs and share stories and a few beers too. While playing for the Triple A Cubs team, Beck lived nearby in a Winnebago. Setting the Giants' single-season record with 48 saves in 1993, Beck was toeing the rubber for San Francisco when they clinched the NL West title in 1997. Beck was the Giants' career saves leader with 199 until Robb Nen passed him in 2002. Beck was on the mound in 1998 when the famous "Oh Nooooooooooo" Ron Santo call could be heard when Brant Brown dropped misplayed the fly ball which allowed three Brewers to score and the Cubs dropped into a tie for the wild card race. That season, Beck saved 51 games for the Cubs. |
