The Famous "Green Box"

What's a green box and why is it so famous? Well, just like a baseball dugout, that's where the stories are told. The "Green Box" appeared on the Baseball Historian web site during our inception back in 1999 and has been holding kangaroo court ever since. Enjoy the stories...

Willie Mays - Baseball's Superstar
Willie Mays is the only player in major league baseball history to hit over 500 home runs, line over 3,000 hits and steal over 300 bases.

Playing for the New York and San Francisco Giants and one season with the New York Mets, "the Say Hey Kid" could do it all, and better than anyone else. In his great career spanning from 1951-1973, Willie Mays batted .302, lined 3,283 hits, 523 doubles, crashed 660 home runs, stole 338 bases, scored an amazing 2,062 runs and collected 1903 RBI's. Mays holds the all-time National League record for most games with 2 or more homers (63).

He is also the only player in history of baseball to hit over 20 doubles, 20 triples, over 30 stole bases and hit over 30 homers in a single season. In 1957, Willie Mays lined 20 D's, 20 T's, stole 38 bases, hit 35 HR's.

He was named the "1960's Player of the Decade" by the "Sporting News". baseballhistorian.com archives - Willie Mays Baseball's Superstar - Green Boxes
