Pirates dump Cubs 10-0 on May 28, 2011

The Pittsburgh Pirates tallied 5 runs off Cubs starter Randy Wells in the 4th inning en-route to a 10-0 victory. Pittsburgh’s hard-luck left-hander Paul Maholm tossed a complete game 3-hit shutout to improve his 2011 season record to 2-7 and lowered his ERA to 3.18. It was his third shutout of his career and fifth complete game.

 

Chicago’s starter Randy Wells, who just returned from the disabled list, fell to 1-1 w/l. He surrendered 5 hits, 5 runs, walked 3 and had 7 Ks in 4 innings.

 

Centerfielder Andrew McCutchen opened the 4th inning with a single, 2B Neil Walker, batting in the cleanup spot, doubled sending McCutchen to third. 3B Steve Pierce singled home both runners. Catcher Chris Snyder walked and shortstop  Ronny Cedeno hit his 2nd homer of year for three more runs. Pirates led 5-0.

 

James Russell pitching for Cubs to start the 5th. 1B Lyle Overbay (5th) and Chris Snider (2nd) both powered homers. James Russell returned to the bullpen after being used as a starter by Cubs manager Mike Quade during Randy Wells  absence. Pirates lead 7-0.

 

Pittsburgh 7th – left fielder Jose Tabata draws a walk from Cubbies reliever Scott Maine. Andrew McCutchen homered (9th) with one out, two runs cross the plate. Pirates up 9-zip.

 

John Grabow now pitching for Chicago. Jose Tabata doubles and rf Garrett Jones doubles for the Bucs 10th and final run of game.
