New York on Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday

 Phil Humber and Gavin Floyd fine mound performances help White Sox win.  Bartolo Colon throws 8 strong innings to lead Yankees to victory.

Last in the AL Central with a lousy 8-14 record, Chicago takes 2 of 4 from first place New Yorkers, who were 12-6 prior to games.

 

Game 1 Action

Chicago 2 New York 1

Chicago’s starter Phil Humber (2-2 with a 3.20 ERA) silenced Yankees bats for 6.1 innings of hitless baseball. With one out NY Alex Rodriguez lined a clean single, breaking up the no-hitter. Phil Humber  then struckout Robinson Cano and used his curve ball to induce Nick Swisher to ground out to first baseman, Paul Konerko.  New York starter A.J. Burnett (3-1 with a 3.52 ERA) yielded 3 hits, 1 run in 8 innings.

The White Sox scored in the 4th on a double by Carlos Quentin, and two ground outs, Konerko and Adam Dunn. Sox relievers Sale and Sergio Santos pitched scoreless 2 innings. Santos picked his 1st save of 2011.

Chicago scored its final run in the 9th. Alexi Ramirez singled, Carlos Quentin reached on fielders’ choice, Ramirez out at 2nd. Brent Lillibridge pinch ran for Carlos. Paulie Konkerko singled Lillibridge home. Sox win 2-0.

Game 2 Action

White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd (3-1 with a 3.60 ERA) struck out 10 Yankees, allowed 4 hits, 2-runs in 8 innings and with the Yankees leading 2-1 Paul Konerko drilled a 2 run homer giving Chicago a 3-2 lead. Relievers Thornton 1/3 and Sergio Santos (2nd save) combined to pitch a scoreless last of 9th, giving White Sox a 3-2 victory. =================================================================

Game 3 Action

New York 3 Chicago 1

Ex-WhSox starter Bartolo Colon used an assortment of sliders, curves and an occasional fastball to halt his former team en-route to a 3-1 NY win. Colon gave up 7 hits, 1 run, had 6 strike outs (Ks) in 8 innings. NY closer Marino Rivera no-hits, 1 K in 1 inning picked up 8 save in 10 attempts in 2011.

Mark Buehrle (1-3 with a 5.12 ERA) started and gave up 6 hits, 3 runs in 7 innings, and reliever Crain pitched a hitless 8th.

Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was thrown out of game in top of first by home plate by umpire Todd Tichenor for arguing a strike call on batter Paul Konerko.  

Yankees leadoff hitter, shortstop Derek Jeter walked to start the action for NY. After two Ks by Mark Buehrle, Alex Rodriguez singled and Robinson Cano blasted his 6th homer of 2011. Yankees lead 3-0.

White Sox scored in 6th on singles by Konerko, Carlos Quentin and Adam Dunn.

Final score Yankees win 3-1

Game 4

Chicago's starting pitcher Edwin Jackson walked too many and the Yankees took advantage and drubbed the White Sox 12-3 to even up the 4-game series. The New Yorkers scored 2 runs in the 1st without a base hit. 4 walks, a wild pitch, 2 stolen bases and a sacrifice fly. Yankees starter CC Sabathia (2-1) pitched 7 innings and yielded 3 runs, all unearned. New York opened the 6th with a hitting cycle and scored 6 in the 6th. Brett Gardner led off with a homer, Edurado Nunez doubled, Curtis Granderson tripled and Nick Swisher singled, plus a few more hits in 6th inning. Edwin Jackson has a 9.18 ERA in his last 3 starts and fell to 2-3 for 2010. ... Baseball Historian
