Opening Day – Baltimore Orioles beat Tampa Bay Rays 4-1

April 1, 2011 before 34,078 in Tampa Bay review by baseball historian

The first two batters in the Baltimore Orioles batting lineup, Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis each had 2 RBI to complement the fine pitching of O’s starter Jeremy Guthrie and roll to a 4-1 opening day victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts lined a 2 run triple in the 5th inning and teammate J.J. Hardy scored twice on a double and a walk.

Right handed Jeremy Guthrie yielded just 3 hits, walked 1, struckout 6 in 8 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Ji Johnson relieved Guthrie and pitched the final inning - surrendered a homer to Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist, who was 2-for-4.

For Tampa Bay David Price (0-1) 5 hits, 4 Runs, 1 W, 7 SO in 7 innings. Relievers were Jake McGee (0 hits in 2/3 inning), A. Russell (0 hits in 1 inning) and C. Ramos (0 hits in 1/3).
