The Florida Marlins pitching staff has handled opposing batters, so far anyway, and the team is powering homers while making far less errors than last year, when they led the majors with 137 errors.

April 19, 2009 Sunday's action in Washington D.C.

Florida Marlins defeat Washington Nationals 7-4.

Marlins' right-fielder Cody Ross lined a solo homer in the 8th inning to knot the score at 3-3, and in the top of the 9th powered a 3-run double to put Florida ahead for good at 7-4. Teammate John Baker had lined a double to tie the score at 4-4 in the top of the 9th after the Nats went up 4-3. The victory was the Marlins seventh straight and improved their 2009 record to 11-1. Reliever Leo Nunez pitched the 8th inning and picked up his 2nd win of the season. Matt Lindstrom pitched a scoreless 9th and gained his 3rd save in 4 tries.

Washinton starter Melky Cabrera held Florida in check for 5 innings. He yielded 3-hits, 2-runs in 5 innings of work. Nationals reliever Saul Rivera (0-3 with a 12.27 ERA) was the losing pitcher. He pitched the 9th and gave up 2-hits, 3 walks and 4 earned runs.

Cody Ross had 5 RBIs and connected for his 3rd homer of the year of Nats reliever Mike Hinckley.
