The Baltimore Orioles knocked newly signed C.C. Sabathia out of the game in the 5th inning in his first start after the $161 million free agent was crushed for 8 hits, yielded 5 bases on balls and 6 earned runs in 4.1 innings. Baltimore's leadoff hitter Brian Roberts lined 3 hits, including a double scored twice in 4 at bats. Speedy centerfielder Adam Jones also had 3-hits , including a triple, scored three times and had 2 RBIs. Shortstop Cesar Izturis, batting 9th in the Orioles lineup, lined a 2-run home run, and a single, scored 2 runs, 2 RBIs in 4 at bats.

Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie (10-12 with a 3.63 in 2008) picked up the win with a strong effort.  In 6 innings, he allowed 7-hit and 3 runs.

Derek the Great Jeter had 3 singles in 5 trips to the plate as Yankees manager Joe Girardi's leadoff hitter. Derek Jeter, the Yankees captain, made two outstanding defensive plays at shortstop.
