Baseball History

Record set on July 7 2006

Travis Hafner powered a second inning grand slam home run in a 9-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles and is the first baseball player to hit 5 grand slams before the All Star game break.

The designated hitter connected on a fastball from Oriole starting pitcher Kris Benson, 9-7 w/l. Indians starter CC Sabathia tossed a 3 hit shutout, his 4th career complete game shutout. CC Sabathia ran his record to 7-4 for the 2006 season.

Travis Hafner has put on his own 2006 home run derby. He has 7 hits in 10 at bats with the bases loaded, including 5 homers with the bases loaded and 25 RBIs.

Travis Hafner broke the old record of 4 grand slams prior to the All Star break by baseball legend Lou Gehrig in 1934. Sid Gordon Boston Braves in 1950, Jim Gentile Baltimore Orioles in 1961, and Jim Northrup Detroit Tigers in 1968, all also hit 4.

Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees holds the major League record with 6 grand slams in one season, 1967. Jim Gentile in 1961 and Ernie Banks Cubs in 1955 both hit 5 slammers.
