April 19, 1987, County Stadium - The Milwaukee Brewers tied the American League record with a once in a lifetime winning streak of 11 consecutive victories to open the 1987 season.

Rob Deer's fifth homer of the young season, to open the fourth innings, broke a 2-2 tie with the Texas Rangers. Deer's solo homer gave the Brewers a 3-2 lead. Brewers' starter Bill Wegman pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, reliever Dan Plesac pickup the save, as the Brewers held on for a 4-3 win over the struggling Rangers, who have lost eight straight games.

Glen Braggs doubled in two runs in the third to tie the score 2-2. In the sixth, Paul Molitor walked, stole second and third and Braggs lofted a sacrifice fly off loser Bobby Witt, scoring Molitor. This proved to be the key run when Pete Incaviglia crashed an 8th inning solo homer. Wegman was rolling along until Incaviglia's homer and was then replaced by Plesac who held the Rangers hitless. Deer's homer, which barely cleared the left-field wall, sent the 39,715 hometown fans into a loud cheering frenzy, with the cheering lasting almost five minutes. It was the second straight day the game was delayed twenty minutes so the crowd could pack into County Stadium where 41,548 watched a Brewer win Friday night.

After the game, Brewers' manager Tom Trebelhorn remarked, 'Every game is a big deal. We're playing with the right perspective. It's a marvelous streak to be on, but I think it's only one in a row with another game tomorrow.' By winning, the Brewers tied the record set by the 1981 Oakland A's for the fastest start in the AL. The Atlanta Braves hold the major league record of 13 wins to open a season. In the locker room, batting hero Glen Braggs said, 'The key to our success right now is that we haven't been cocky. The way we're playing now everybody has confidence. Right now it's a lot of fun for us.' archives Headline News Baseball Players
