Cubs Crush Cardinals on 2 Homers by Pafko Cubs Crush Cardinals on 2 Homers by Pafko

April 22, 1951 - from Original Newspaper Clipping from Chicago Sun-Times

Bob Rush was the starting pitcher and the Cubs survived with a 10-5 victory. With all that behind them they can proceed Monday in quest of their season's fourth success.

Rush lasted four innings, but not enough damage had been done to offset subsequent heroics by Andy Pafko and Bob Schultz, the rookie left-hander.

Pafko's two home runs which drove in five runs contributed the margin of triumph and Schultz's five-inning no-hit relief performance held the Cardinals at bay.

Rush was touched for eight hits and four runs during the stint, including a homer by first baseman Steve Bilko.

THIRD VICTORY

It was the Cubs third victory in four games.

The Cubs were fashioning a two-run lead until Bilko's homer, a tremendous clout, went on a line into the centerfield bleacher in the second inning. In the third, there were singles by Peanuts Lowrey and Enos Slaughter and the former scored when Stan Musial forced Slaughter at second.

The Cubs scored in the fourth when second baseman Wayne Terwilliger walked and Phil Cavaretta singled. Cardinal starter Cloyd Boyer then unwound a wild pitch with Twig on third. Then Pafko lofted his homer into the left field stand, scoring Cavaretta.

The Cardinals two runs in the fourth to lead 4-3. Pafko's second homer with Frankie Baumholtz and Cavaretta on base, put the Cubs ahead for good 6-4.

The third Cub homer came in the eight inning when Rube Walker belted one on the right field roof with shortstop Roy Smalley on first.
