The First Curve Ball Pitcher - Major Leagues - Hall of Fame Baseball Player

'Candy' Cummings is honored by the Hall of Fame as the inventor of the curve ball. He once said, ' When I was only 14 years old, I came up with the idea while throwing clam shells on a New England beach around 1862 and once broke my wrist throwing the pitch'. Cummings played mostly in professional leagues before the formation of the National League in 1876. From 1872-75, he played in the old National Association of Professional Baseball and averaged 31 wins per/yr. Candy Cummings played only two seasons in our newly formed major leagues and his record was 21-22, ERA 2.78. He started 43 games and completed 40 and pitched 5 shutouts.
